2nd Annual Body Confidence Canada Awards

On September 9th, I attended a truly inspiring event hosted by Aisha Fairclough and Jill Andrew, the leading ladies of Fat in the City. This fabulous event was the 2nd Annual Body Confidence Canada Awards (BCCA's) which I also had the pleasure of attending last year. The event was held on the 51st floor of Panorama, a lounge with the best view of the Toronto cityscape.

I always have a spectacular time at events that Fat in the City host, as they certainly know how to celebrate any occasion (see here the evening they hosted at PRiMAALA). Upon arrival, attendees were welcomed with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres served up with the excitement of the evening!

The purpose of the event was to recognize and celebrate body confidence/body positivity, as well as acknowledge those who have made a difference in the community. The theme of the night was that "Everybody has a story" and I couldn't agree more. Each of the speakers, contributors and attendees (like myself) have a story. We were all gathered in the room for one reason or another.

I think the most important takeaway is that we all have a story, and we need to share our narratives to have a chance of precipitating any change in the negative attitudes cast on us because of our bodies.

It is amazing to see such a diverse representation of individuals (in this case, women) who constantly strive to create a positive impact on the community. Whether it be through fashion, self-esteem promotion, the arts or academia, all of the winners share something in common: they are warriors of the body positive community. Winners include of the highly coveted awards include: Ophilia Alleyne (plus model), Jewel Katz (award-winning author), Stefanie Augusteijn (businesswoman owner of SexyPlus Clothing), Cindy Baker (multi-media artist). Additionally, distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Carla Rice (award-winning scholar) was also honoured as a recipient for her work in the academic body positive community.

The event was the perfect opportunity catch up with old friends and also make new ones.  Of course, I spent some of the evening picking the brains of Fat in the City. I also connected with many other body positive individuals (both women and men), including bloggers, models, entrepreneurs and academics.

My roommate (a makeup artist at Sephora) completed my makeup look for the event and I loved how it turned out. The BCCA's are a place where you can't help but feel confident.. confidence was in the air there. My outfit, makeup and even my hair (at the start of the night) really elevated my confidence, and I had a great time as a result. Never underestimate the power of getting dressed up and being glamorous. Living a very busy life, I have little chance to do this so it means so much to me when I have this kind of opportunity.
