Makeup Monday: Natural Contouring Tutorial

If you're reading this, you are in for a treat! Today's Makeup Monday post is the first of its kind on the blog. I have been getting a bit tired of the endless product reviews, so I have decided to mix it up a bit. I will admit, there is a bit of a 'review' ingrained into this post. This is due to the fact that I have chosen to create this look with products that I heard great things about, and have come to love myself.

I have been in *love* with the idea and technique of contouring for a while now. As a full-figured woman, I have grown to accept and love my curves. Yet, I still haven't quite gotten over the concept of the double chin or chubby face. It wasn't until this September when I realized how much of an impact contouring had on the face. As some of you might remember, my roommate is a makeup artist at Sephora... seriously I have the best luck at having roommates who are makeup artists. In September, Sarah contoured my face for the 2nd annual Body Confidence Canada Awards. That night, I probably received the most compliments on my makeup... ever. From then on, I swore that I would make contouring part of my regular (or at least semi-regular) makeup routine.

I have coveted the Anastasia Contour Kit for as long as I can remember, but sadly it was a limited edition special at Sephora.. or so I thought! Sephora decided to bring back the Contour Kit as a regular-stocked item and I couldn't be happier. I am fair skinned, so naturally I purchased the Light-Medium Kit (no cakeface here). However, Anastasia added a second kit shade, Medium-Tan for all you tan skinned beauties.

Tips for a Natural Contour
1) For a rounder face, cut (with contour powder) just above your cheek bone, not directly following it.
2) The majority of the product on your brush should be the lightest colour if you want a natural look. Feel free to add a bit of a darker shade to the brush as well (Don't forget to tap off!).
3) Only highlight what you want to emphasize. Highlighting draws the light to certain areas and makes them stand out.
4) Make sure each stroke of your contour brush is an isolated one. DO NOT drag your brush up and down your cheek bones unless you want to look streaky.
5) ALWAYS blend out and soften extra product on your face. For the cheek bone area, blend into your hairline (not downward, but rather in a swirling motion). For chin area, you may softly blend the product down onto your neck, but be careful of streaks.
6) You can never have too many brushes in your tool kit; they all do something different!

Let's Talk Brushes
I used a total of 5 brushes for this look: one contour brush, one bronzer brush, one blush brush and two different highlighter brushes. First of all, I must highly recommend the Sephora Pro Contour Brush #74Before this, I was using a regular angled contour brush by Quo, which produced extremely harsh contour lines. This contour brush is slim enough to produce perfectly even streaks and it also blends out your product perfectly!!! I used two different types of highlight brushes, a mini stippling highlight brush from MAC for the stark yellow tones and a large fan brush for the soft pink glitter highlight to get the best effect. The last two brushes were used with my MAC glitter bronzer and Nars Super Orgasm Blush to finish off the look.

Final Close-Up: added Sephora shadow 'Romantic Comedy', MAC mascara and NARS lip colour 'New Lover'
